New Car: 2012 Range Rover Evoque

Land Rover has just released the name and first picture of the new baby Range Rover, and it’s called the Evoque. (That’s pronounced “evoke” and not “evo-cue.”) In what has to be one of the oddest coincidences in vehicle-naming history, the Land Rover concept that became this Evoque—the LRX—used the same three letters as Cadillac’s production XLR roadster, which itself was based on a concept called the Evoq. Weird.

Details on this Rangie are still sketchy (an unveil event, which involved a smoking white box and Posh Spice, provided no real information but you can watch a replay here), although Land Rover does say that the little truck is aimed at the North American market, where it will be equipped with four-wheel drive. Interestingly, the Evoque unveiled at England’s Goodwood Festival of Speed was left-hand drive. Sales will start this fall after the official introduction at October’s Paris auto show.

The styling of the Evoque, as you can see, stays true to the LRX concept, which debuted at the 2008 Detroit auto show. It retains the concept’s sloping roof and rising beltline and will have just two side doors (Land Rover calls this mini-UV a coupe, of course). That should help distance it from the more conventional, five-door LR2 SUV in the company’s lineup.
