Spied: 2010 Ford Mustang Coupe

Just a few weeks ago, we brought you scintillating coverage on a 2010 Ford Mustang convertible that had so much garb covering everything that one would expect massive changes underneath. But what appears to be the case is a minor refresh that is nonetheless significant enough to have Ford Mustang aficionados all atwitter. Here’s what we can tell so far:
As we saw on the ragtop, the pony car’s signature front end now features a much more reverse-angle cant to the upper grille, as well as a larger intake within the new lower bumper, à la the Shelby GT500.

The headlamps are clearly highly detailed combination assemblies rather than simple circles, a change that conjures up memories of the unloved amoeba lights on the 996-generation Porsche 911, which were promptly returned to proper circles for the 997. Let’s hope it goes better for the Mustang.
In back, revised taillamps appear to trisect the Mustang’s trademark vertical red blocks with clear-lens turn signals/reverse lights, which we’re also not sure we like. However, as we said previously, we’ll reserve judgment until we see it naked. That said, this particular coupe is interesting. Not only is it wearing the GT500’s big, sexy wheels while sending its exhaust through what appear to be three-inch pipes, but it has a rather high hood with extra apertures and even a set of ancillary gauges mounted in the A-pillar.
Is this the next Mustang GT? Or perhaps something more, uh, super? Could the upcoming “Boss” modular V-8 be hiding under the hood, making it the logical competitor to the Hemi-powered Dodge Challenger and the LS3-equipped Chevrolet Camaro SS?
We’ll surely find out in coming months, as we can’t imagine Ford allowing Dodge and GM to capture all the musclecar headlines for long.
