Geneva Show 2011 Highlights: 2012 Kia Picanto

Kia has revealed its all-new Picanto city car at the Geneva motor show.

A total of four engines will be offered in global markets, including petrol, flex fuel and bi-fuel version of its 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit and a petrol 1.25-litre four-cylinder engine. Power outputs will range between 68bhp and 84bhp and torque outputs 69lb ft and 89lb ft. The UK is only likely to take the petrol versions, with a diesel model to follow after launch.

Kia has paid particular attention to improving the CO2 emissions and fuel economy of this ‘Kappa’ group of engines. CO2 figures will range between 95g/km and 105g/km for standard models and 90g/km and 100g/km for models equipped with Kia’s fuel-saving ISG technologies, such as stop-start.

Engines will be mated to either five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions, depending on the model.

The new Picanto is longer than the outgoing car, with a stretched wheelbase to provide more cabin space for occupants. A five-door model will be available from launch later in the spring and a sportier three-door will hit the UK in the autumn.

Kia says it has packed the Picanto with ‘large car’ technologies. Including LED daytime running lights, button-start with smart key, grip-type outside door handles and either six or seven airbags, depending on the model.

Pricing and full specification details will be announced closer to the car’s launch.
