Geneva Show 2011 Highlights: 2012 Saab 9-3

Saab is giving its venerable 9-3 one last update, nine years after the car’s introduction.

It gets new front bumpers and headlights that are designed to bring it more into line with the 9-5, plus a revised cabin that includes metallic-effect trim and new fascia materials.

There are two new 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines, with 163bhp and 220bhp; the units offer more power than the old motors, but reduce fuel consumption and emissions by around four per cent.

Saab has also retuned its TTiD diesel engines, bringing the SportWagon estate model to 119g/km of CO2 emissions and a fuel figure of 62.8mpg.

Saab is also celebrating its first year of post-GM existence with the 9-3 Independence Edition cabriolet. The 1.9-litre twin-turbodiesel comes with an auto gearbox, new-design 18in alloys and parchment sports leather seats.
