General Motors
This US automaker has always been one of the top 10 best cars manufacturers in the U.S. General Motors produced 5,657,225 passenger cars in 2005 and is just behind Toyota in popularity. It has created award-winning brands in Cadillac and Chevrolet. Though poor products and reduced sales had given it a bad hit in recent times, the auto-manufacturer is still in the reckoning. It is standing on its feet again with winners like the Chevrolet Cruze compact.
Renault
This reputed automobile producer is based in France and its collaboration with Nissan makes it one of the leading carmakers in the world. As per a study by OICA, The International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, it sold 2,625,796 units in 2010 as against 2,296,009 in 2009. It is the tenth among the top car brands in the world.
Renault has recently tied up with Nissan and Daimler AG. Formerly known as Daimler Chrysler, the AG may be out of this list but it still has a great reputation among car buyers. It is the thirteenth largest maker of automobiles in the world. This German car builder has had a great reversal of fortunes due to the recent economic downturn but is hoping to make a comeback by striking collaboration with Renault-Nissan.

It was the first large-scale manufacturer to introduce hybrid vehicles into the market and has sold more hybrid cars than any other maker. In early 2007, it was declared to be the most profitable car manufacturer with the largest sale of automobiles. As per 2010 global sales reports, it sold as many as 8,557,351 units.

Volkswagen (abbreviated VW) is the world's third largest automobile manufacturer. The company is headquartered in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. Volkswagen is the original marque within the Volkswagen Group, which includes the car marques Audi, Bentley Motors, Bugatti Automobiles, Automobili Lamborghini, SEAT, Škoda Auto and heavy goods vehicle manufacturer Scania.

Ford
The US based Ford Motor Company is the second largest carmaker in America and the fifth largest in the Europe. Worldwide, it is the fifth largest manufacturer of automobiles. In 2010, it sold 5,313,000 units across the world with a 9.19 per cent sales annual increase. The company had a remarkable net income of $6.6 billion in 2010 which was its highest net income in a period of over 10 years.
Until recently, Ford had been the third largest automaker in the world. But Volkswagen overtook it since 2006.
Hyundai
Even a few years back, this carmaker was nowhere close to where it is today. Standing as the fourth largest car producer in the world, Hyundai has become a highly respectable name in automobile industry. In 2010 alone, the Hyundai Motor Group had a global sale of 5,744,018 units which helped it edge past Ford.
Part of Hyundai’s success story can also be attributed to Kia. It will not be wrong to say that the Hyundai-Kia collaboration benefited the Korean auto-bigwig to a major extent. Hyundai achieved a record profit of $4.7 billion while Kia had a 55 percent rise in its net profits with its annual income standing at $2 billion.
Suzuki
The Japanese Suzuki Motor Corporation is not only into car-making but also in manufacturing of motorcycles, compact vehicles and automobiles for all kind of terrains. It is the second largest automaker in Japan and the ninth among the ten top cars brands worldwide. It sold 2,892,945 units in 2010.
Honda
Honda Motor Company, Ltd. is a Japanese multinational corporation primarily known as a manufacturer of automobiles. In early 2011, Honda overtook Nissan to become the second biggest Japanese automaker. As of now, it is the sixth biggest car manufacturer in the world. Back in the ‘80s it launched luxury brands like Acura. In 2011, it is coming with small cars that are supposed to entice buyers with medium budget.
PSA Group (Peugeot)
The PSA Peugeot Citroën Group is the second largest carmaker in Europe and is highly regarded for its Peugeot models. 2010 saw the French motor-manufacturer having record income with the sales figures up by 13%. It sold 3,602,200 units in the year against 3,042,311 in 2009 becoming the eighth among the best car brands in the world.
