New Concept Car: Suzuki Swift Plug-In Hybrid
What Suzuki calls the Swift Plug-in Hybrid would probably be better called the Swift electric range extender, a la the Chevy Volt. Employing lithium-ion batteries and an electric motor which drives the car, a small 660cc engine acts as a generator, engaging only to charge the batteries when they need more juice.
Targeted mainly at city commuters and shoppers, Suzuki says that most motorists (using a second car) in its survey travel less than 15 miles a day. As one Suzuki source tells us, "Unlike pure electric cars, which can stop in inconvenient places if the batteries die, this Plug-in Hybrid's generator will allow the car to recharge itself, allowing you to get home. It also cuts the time you'd have to spend at a charging station."
