Spied: 2011 Porsche 911 Cabriolet

Porsche's engineers have been hard at work with the development and testing of its future sports cars. So far we've shown you the next-generation Boxster, 911, and rumored Speedster models, but most recently, our intrepid spy shoots spotted a 911 Cabriolet with Turbo-style bodywork, presumably of the 998-series specification.

It sports all the usual Porsche cues -- round headlights, independent front turn signals, bulbous fore and aft haunches -- except in a revised form. The headlights, for example, are positioned higher because of new safety regulations. Its soft-top greenhouse appears also to be elongated for more rear passenger room.

So far, the 998 Cabrio's biggest design question mark has to do with the exterior's thoroughly hidden rear end. The LED taillight housings will likely receive a substantial redesign, as will the boxer's horizontal cooling slats, we're guessing.

The new Carreras will employ vastly revised direct-injected flat-sixes with the usual PDK and six-speed manual gearboxes. Rear- and all-wheel drive options will continue to be offered.

Development is most likely far from complete, so stay tuned for more images and details surrounding the 998-series Porsche 911.
