New Concept Car: Toyota FT-EV II

As first reported in our initial Toyota FT-86 Concept story, joining the much anticipated show car on Toyota's stand at this year's 2009 Tokyo show will be a highly efficient, ultra-compact EV concept called the FT-EV II.

How compact? Try even smaller that than the iQ that's headed our way soon, but yet still capable of transporting four adults in comfort. Key to giving passengers space is the concept's drive-by-wire joystick control that replaces the steering wheel, accelerator, and brake pedals.

Occupants will find the latest in networking technologies integrated into the FT-EV II's "retro-futuristic" cabin space. It's the ultimate in personalized connectivity, Toyota says, and can provide personalized movie/music downloads and data storage functions, among other things. It can even connect to home networks to save on energy usage.

The FT-EV II's design allows for a more capacious feel, with extra large windows providing clear visibility all around. Electric sliding doors aid in passenger ingress and egress, particularly in tight spaces. There's even an auxiliary window set below the windshield for a clear view of the street ahead. For added safety and vehicle awareness, designers implemented see-through LED rear combination taillights.

Officials say the FT-EV II Concept is extremely quiet, thanks to the Toyota-bred motor-control technology integrated into the compact lithium ion battery fed EV powertrain. Speaking of go-power, the motor can provide a fully charged range of 90 km, or around 55 miles, according to Toyota, and can propel the FT-EV II to a top speed of around 62 mph.
