New Car: 2012 Fiat Freemont

Fiat will show off the latest product of its tie-up with Chrysler at the Geneva Motor Show. Called the Freemont, the seven-seat MPV is a mildly reengineered version of the 2011 Dodge Journey which arrived at the LA Show last year.

The Fiat will be built at Chrysler’s Toluca plant in Mexico, where the US-market 500 is also assembled, and imported to Europe, although Fiat is yet to decide whether to bring the car to the UK.

The Fiat Freemont has seven seats as standard, and slots into the range to fill the gap vacated by the six-seater Multipla and seven- or eight-seat Ulysee, which were phased out at the end of last year.

Design tweaks from the Journey include new bumpers, a new front grille and LED taillights on the outside, plus tweaks to the dashboard, soft-touch materials and improved soundproofing are intended to add class to the cabin.

Fiat has also tweaked the steering and suspension for greater accuracy, and added a choice of powerplaints. Two versions of Fiat’s 2.0-litre Multijet diesel will be available from launch, with either 138bhp or 168bhp. Both cars drive the front wheels through a manual gearbox. A four-wheel-drive model will offered later, with the 168bhp diesel or Chrysler’s 272bhp 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol, both with automatic transmissions. For more details click here.
