1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata M-Edition
Enlarge PhotoWe get a lot of reader mail at High Gear Media, and we’re happy to report that very little of it involves threats of bodily harm. The most common question we get involves the purchase of a replacement vehicle, and reader Sondi Moore has reached out to us seeking advice on a replacement for a beloved 1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata.
Sondi’s car has racked up 200,000 miles on the odometer, and while it may not have any current problems, that’s about the time when multiple systems start to fail. One week it’s the clutch slave cylinder, followed by a pinhole leak in the radiator. Get those items fixed, and a wheel bearing is bound to fail. No matter how much affection you have towards a car, there’s always a time to cut your losses and move on to a newer model.
Sondi has a limited budget as well, and can’t spend more than $11,000 on reliable transportation. Still, that’s a decent amount to work with, and Sondi wants another compact car that’s fun to drive. With those primary factors in mind, below are the top five cars we’d recommend. Each is entertaining in its own way, each offers reasonable (or better than reasonable) handling and each can be found for less than $11,000 on the used market.

If you love your 1997 Miata, Sondi, you’re really going to love the latest generation of Mazda’s classic roadster. The third-generation MX-5 has all the charm of your first-generation car, but with more horsepower, more interior room, more trunk space and, unfortunately, more weight. While the first generation cars were less-than-ideal as daily drivers, the latest generation manages to yield a better ride quality without sacrificing handling. Used examples are plentiful, and $11,000 is enough money to buy you a clean 2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata.
2004 Acura RSX Type S

We’ll go out on a limb and assume you know how to drive a manual transmission. If that’s the case, you’ll want to look at the latest model Acura RSX Type-S you can find within you budget, but we suspect it’ll be a 2004. The 2004 Acura RSX Type-S blended performance with a surprising amount of civility, but finding one that hasn’t been thoroughly abused may prove difficult. Look for cars that haven’t been “upgraded” to aftermarket exhausts, wheels or suspension kits by previous owners, since they’re generally signs that the car has been driven hard. If you can find a clean example, your money will buy you hatchback functionality, Acura reliability and the thrill of a 201-horsepower four-cylinder engine and six-speed gearbox that loves to be wound out. If you can’t drive a manual, or prefer the simplicity of an automatic for rush-hour commuting, opting for a Base RSX should allow you to get a newer car, maybe even a 2006. You’ll lose out on the horsepower of the RSX Type S, but even base model RSXs produced 160 horsepower.
2007 Scion tC
Enlarge Photo2007 Scion tC
Few cars blend functionality, reliability and handling better than Scion’s tC series. In 2007, buyers could choose between the stripped-down Spec model, with its 16-inch wheels, glass roof and relatively plain interior; or the Base model, which came with 17-inch wheels, a sunroof and cruise control. Both models featured a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, good for 160 horsepower and mated to either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual gearbox. Used 2007 Scion tC Spec models should be well within your price range, and you may be able to find a 2007 Base models for under $11,000 if you look hard enough.

Hyundai will launch three new or revised models in the next year – with the Hyundai i30 being followed by a new Santa Fe and refreshed i20.
The first sketch hinting at the looks of the new i30 has already been released, and the all-new car will be unveiled in the metal at September’s Frankfurt motor show.
The new Santa Fe will follow, although it is likely to take a new name with an ix prefix. A face-lifted i20 comes shortly after.
Tony Whitehorn, managing director of Hyundai UK, said: “We’ve already shown with our other recent models that each car that comes out of this company is quite improved, both technically and in terms of emotional appeal.”
Hyundai will also launch its new i40 estate next month, and the Veloster coupe in November.
“The Veloster takes us into a new area – it’s absolutely not a sports car, and it’s not about niche appeal. We hope to attract buyers form all segments,” said Whitehorn. “It’s a new type of car, and we’ve seen from the Mini, Citroen’s DS range and the Nissan Juke that the UK car market likes innovation.”
However, Whitehorn ruled out Hyundai extending its style-led model range beyond the upcoming Veloster coupe at present. “If the market shows there’s an opportunity then we can consider it, but at the moment there are no other plans,” he said.

This sportier three-door version of the recently launched Kia Picanto has been officially revealed ahead of UK sales in September.
The new doors and rear panels give the three-door Picanto a “fresh, dynamic appearance,” according to Kia, accentuated by the car’s rising belt line and side mouldings.
External revisions to the new model include a bigger front grille - available with silver or red trim surrounds – and revised bumpers, with a “slim, full-width lower grille, housing large black-bezelled foglamps,” at the front and a rectangular black central section at the rear. An exposed twin-chromed exhaust finishes off the car's new rear.
Four trim levels are available for the three-door Kia Picanto - 1, 1 Air (both carried over from the five-door car), Halo and Equinox – the last two of which join the Picanto range for the first time.
Halo and Equinox versions get Bluetooth connectivity with voice recognition, automatic LED lights front and back, side skirts and a red front grille surround as standard.
Halo also includes 14-inch alloys, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, reverse parking sensors and an electronic instrument binnacle as well as a high gloss white centre fascia and Lunar Glow metallic paint outside.
Top-spec Equinox models are finished with Kia’s ‘Chilli’ red interior and gloss black fascia and gearknob. Beefy 15-inch telephone-dial style alloys “lend a more sporting look” to the exterior, which is finished in Galaxy Black metallic paint. Aditionally, Equinox models get automatic air conditioning and smart key with starter button.
Power comes courtesy of the Picanto’s current engine range – either a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 68bhp and 99g/km Co2, or the larger four-pot unit, which produces 84bhp and 100g/km Co2, when fitted with stop-start. Both are exempt from London’s Congestion Charge.
Prices for the new three-door Picanto start from £7795 for the entry-level 1.0 ‘1’ - £200 less than the five-door equivalent - rising to £12,295 for the 1.25 Halo fitted with a four-speed automatic gearbox. Equinox comes with the manual ‘box only and costs £11,695.
Kia predicts that the new three-door car will make up 45 per cent of Picanto sales.

The Problem: Mercedes-Benz is recalling some 2002 and 2003 Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans, which were sold under Dodge and Freightliner brands. Because the vans were sold and driven before the U.S. switched to Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel fuel, it can suffer from corrosion when using fuel with higher concentrations of sulfur. Exhaust gases passing through the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system can corrode the intake manifold, which could lead to damage to the fuel return line and firewall around the manifold.
The Fix: Chrysler will notify Dodge owners, while Mercedes-Benz will notify those with Freightliner-branded vehicles. Dealers will replace the affected intake manifold for free. Owners can call Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 or Mercedes-Benz’s Sprinter division at 1-843-695-5031.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 665 vehicles, all hailing from the 2002 and 2003 model years. Said vehicles were sold as the Dodge Sprinter 2500, Dodge Sprinter 3500, Freightliner Sprinter 2500, and Freightliner Sprinter 3500.

The Problem: Nissan is recalling some 2012 Nissan Altima sedans and NV vans because their air bag control units were assembled incorrectly. The units may have been wired incorrectly, which means the air bags may not properly inflate in the event of a crash. If the airbags do not deploy during a crash, the driver or passengers could be injured.
The Fix: Nissan will replace the airbag control unit free of charge, and will begin contacting the affected owners on August 22, 2011. Owners can call Nissan for more information at 1-800-647-7261.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 32 Nissan Altimas manufactured between June 15, 2011 and June 21, 2011, and 22 Nissan NVs manufactured between June 23, 2011 and June 28, 2011.

The Problem: Maserati is recalling some 2009 Quattroporte and GranTurismo models because of issues with the rear suspension. Both left and right toe-in tie-rods were machined incorrectly, which could lead to them failing. If the tie-rods fail, one or both of the rear wheels could fall out of alignment and cause the vehicle to lose control.
The Fix: Starting in September 2011, Maserati will replace the affected tie-rods and then perform a rear-end alignment, free of charge. Owners can contact Maserati by calling 1-201-816-2600.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 763 MaseratiQuattroporte and GranTurismo models manufactured between July 3, 2008, and September 30, 2008.

We have already spied the new car in winter testing and strutting its stuff in the city, but this our first look without any camouflage tape obscuring the sheet metal. From the photos, we can tell that BMW’s 3er has become more grown up, taking on some design cues from the 5 and 7 Series. Sleeker headlights, more prominent hood creases, and a stubbier trunklid with new taillight designs are among the highlights. The overhead views also reveal the special in-dash projectors needed for BMW’s head-up display system — which would mark the first time it was available in the 3 Series line.
It’s widely expected that the 2013 3 Series sedan will debut in March 2012, which would coincide with the Geneva Motor Show. Coupe, station wagon, and convertible variants will all trickle out several months after the sedan bows.
The biggest change for the American market is that BMW’s new turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four may become the base engine for the 328i. The downsized engine has already made its way under the hood of the BMW Z4 sDrive28i and 2012 528i. The 335i is expected to continue using a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, but power could climb a bit higher in the new car.
F30Post says that BMW will release photos and information on the new 3 Series in November, ahead of a public debut at Geneva next March. The sedan is apparently set to go on sale in the U.S. in spring 2012. Watch this space for more as the next in a long line of BMW 3 Series moves steadily closer to fruition.

Development on the next-generation Dodge Viper is well underway, and our spy photographers have just caught it wearing its new front end. The nose has been slapped on both coupe and convertible versions, which we’ll take as unofficial confirmation that both body styles will live on.
Although the two Viper prototypes wear previous-gen sheetmetal from the A-pillar back, the new nose can be seen peeking from beneath the camouflage. A large crosshair grille will again be the fascia’s signature element, but it’s been updated with Dodge’s latest parallel-bar design (as seen on the 2011 Durango, among others). The headlights appear to be more angular and swept back, disappearing under the camo and flowing farther up the fender than before. Mesh on the hood indicates the reappearance of a center-mounted intake, as well as louvered vents, and another opening appears just ahead of the front doors on the body sides. We’re expecting the Viper to arrive with a fairly menacing countenance, particularly if huge intakes or cutouts appear next to the grille, as seem to be implied under the roadster’s disguise.
Under the hood, the Viper will undoubtedly pack the brawn to back up its looks. There are a few potential powerplants, but the most likely candidate is a revised version of the last car’s 8.4-liter V-10, producing upwards of 700 hp and perhaps equipped with Fiat’s MultiAir valve-lift system. Additionally, rumor has it that Dodge could even offer an entry-level Viper with the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 from its SRT8 offerings. The new car might also pack an adaptive sport suspension, and we expect a six-speed manual to again serve as the transmission.
Dodge has confirmed that the next-generation Viper will debut in late 2012. That’s a long time to hold us in suspense, but rest assured we’ll have our camera lenses and eyes peeled for more details in the meantime.
